Advanced treatment of produced water by ceramic membrane filtration:

Produced water is the largest waste stream generated during the production of oil and gas. The characteristics of produced water are very complicated and vary from reservoir to reservoir. Membrane technology is quite efficient to remove dispersed oil and suspended solids in produced water in order to meet the target of Zero Harmful Discharge (e.g., oil concentration < 5 mg/L) on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. However, membrane fouling is usually very severe in produced water treatment and thus increases a lot of the treatment cost.;

The research is focused on fouling mitigation and control by high-frequency backpulsing and chemical cleaning methods. The significance of backpulsing parameters will be screened and the optimum backpulsing conditions will be predicted. Chemical cleaning strategies and protocols will be studied and developed taking into account the impact of membrane operation on dominating fouling mechanisms and how foulants may be removed for full recovery of membrane permeability.
