Formål / Sammendrag:

Recent advancement in wastewater treatment technology showed that there is increasing interest to develop biological systems for removal and recovery of valuable resources such as phosphorus and nitrogen from industrial and domestic wastewater.

Currently, the application of moving bed biofilm reactor processes has become one of the most popular, promising and reliable biological systems. This is because it is capable of resisting shock load, huge organic matter loading, less head loss, no backwashing requirement, compact system, no clogging problem (often observed with membrane bioreactors), reduced sludge production and financial saving related to sludge transportation, maintenance and chemical dosing costs compared to the conventional activated sludge system.

Therefore, a pilot scale continuous moving bed biofilm reactor is under development at NTNU to treat municipal wastewater and its performance will be evaluated during the PhD study period.
