The water is a renewable resource, but often consumed much faster than it can be regenerated; To avoid the risk of supplying insufficient quantity of water of inadequate quality to users, a sustainable and efficient management of the urban water system is necessary. This is a complex topic due to the joint effect of many factors such as climate change, population growth, increasing urbanization, ageing of infrastructures, and the environmental pollution.

This research aims at optimizing the performance of a water distribution system (WDS) in terms of water saving and reduction of energy consumptions and consequently environmental impacts, developing appropriate methodologies and tools.

The ultimate goal is to integrate hydraulic modelling and material and energy flow analysis in order to develop an integrated tool to manage reliable WDS in a resource-efficient way.
